Leadership Lessons from R.A. Dickey
Since reading his autobiography I’ve been a fan of R.A. Dickey. I appreciate this article on leadership lessons that we can learn from the Mets pitcher. (HT: Challies) I also agree with Challies that this is a biography that you need to buy.
How Biblical is Biblical Counseling
David Murray, author of Christians Get Depressed Too, asks a very important question of biblical counseling. Murray is a guy that you need to listen to on this topic.
The Strengths and Weaknesses of Working from Home
Personally, I couldn’t do it. I’m not disciplined enough to not get distracted while at home. That is especially true if my kiddos were here—not sure I could work instead of play with them. Trevin weights the pros and cons of working at home. Interesting thoughts.
7 Marks of Healthy Small Groups
Rick Warren, writing for The Resurgence, looks at seven marks of healthy small groups. Think what you will about Warren and Saddleback but they have a very healthy small group program.
Looks like something I’d do, OUCH!
I have to take exception with your statement about small groups at Saddleback. As a member for over 11 years before I decided to leave, I was in a number of small groups and several of them for over 1 year. Most often they started with someone willing to open their home to other people. While there are 2 required training sessions to continue hosting a group, there is not any real testing for doctrinal soundness or knowledge of hermeneutics (Bible studies). I sat through a lot of genuinely bad theology with people reading stuff like the Shack and thinking its great and all kinds of bad stuff like that. The best model I’ve actually seen is Brad House’s model for community groups at Mars Hill. They have a detailed accountability structure and set biblical standards for deacons for their leaders.
Thanks for the first hand experience. My statement isn’t from experience but only what I’ve read about their percentages of involvement. I’m currently reading Brad House’s book and I’ve been a fan quite some time of the way Mars Hill does their small groups (again from a distance).
Thanks for the comment.
