Southern Baptists and Spiritual Myopia
I should probably stay out of this one. But I do feel like this is a really good piece by Dave Miller. There are some really good points here. Good points from Ed Stetzer too.
I appreciated this piece from Marty Duren.
Aaron Armstrong live-blogged The Gospel Coalition Conference. Here is an e-book that Aaron compiled with his notes.
I don’t know why I laughed so hard at this:
Mike, I asked this question over at Marty Duren’s blog, about the short piece you refer to:
Marty, given what I know of what Joel Osteen teaches, when I read these words, I have an immediate negative reaction to them. Perhaps that’s as it should be. But suppose these words were not attributed to Osteen. Suppose that they were instead attributed to, oh, MacArthur, Piper, Swindoll, or someone like that. My first reaction, I would think, would be to say, “Oh, he’s making a reference to the ideas in Ephesians 2:8-10.”
Whaddya think?
I think you make a really good point, honestly. We can’t help but read Osteen’s entire ministry into those words. I do wonder if we would hear Piper, etc. saying such a thing? I say that because it seems that another problem with Osteen’s comment is that it’s less about Christ and more about the Christian life.
Nonetheless, you do have a great point…we do often read someone’s entire ministry into their quotes.
