Day 24: That we would know the hope to which we are called
I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might (Ephesians 1:16-19 ESV)
The hope to which God has called us is so great that it takes the power of God—yes, the same power which resurrected the crucified son of God—for us to even begin to comprehend its greatness. But knowing this hope has an impact on the way we live our lives.
Watching a taped sports game illustrates this. If you know your team won that third quarter interception doesn’t get you nearly as upset. Knowing the outcome changes things. Likewise knowing the hope to which we are called changes things for the church. It helps us to know what battles need to be fought and which battles we should walk away from. It causes us to labor for the things which truly matter. So let us pray that we as a church will be able to comprehend the greatness of this hope to which we are called.
Father, the gifts you have lavished upon us are so great that it takes your power for us to even begin to comprehend them. We deserve hell but you have given us this great hope. Lord, give us the strength to believe Your promises. Give us the wisdom to discern your hope and to live accordingly. Help us to see the greatness of the hope to which you’ve called us and to labor diligently to give others this great hope in Jesus.
